35 Years and Counting

BETM has been optimizing our customers’ generation assets for over 35 years. Our current organization has its roots in Citizens Power, dating back to 1989 when Citizens obtained the first FERC power marketing license and market-based-rate authorization.

Today, we are a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation and part of the Diamond Generating family. The future of energy is bright and BETM continues its leadership role.

History Highlights

  • 1986

    BETM predecessor Citizens Energy Corp. (CEC) obtains first FERC authorization for non-utility to sell wholesale electricity

  • 1989

    Citizens Power is founded and obtained the first FERC power marketing license and market-based-rate authorization.

  • 1994

    CP&L and Lehman form Citizens Lehman Power

  • 1997

    Citizens Lehman Power sold to The Energy Group; name changed to Citizens Power

  • 1998

    Citizens Power sold to Peabody Coal affiliate

  • 2000

    Citizens Power acquired by Edison Mission Energy (EME); merged into EMMT. Energy management services for Homer City power plant

  • 2001-02

    EMMT  early mover in FTR markets NYISO & PJM

  • 2005

    Provides asset management services for its first wind farm and commences MISO FTR trading

  • 2008

    CAISO FTR Trading & ERCOT merchant wind dispatch

  • 2009

    EMMT partners w/ H-P Energy Resources on first merchant transmission in PJM

  • 2010-13

    ERCOT FTR trading (2010) MISO and SPP South FTR trading (2013)

  • 2014

    NRG acquires EMMT; launches Boston Energy Trading & Marketing

  • 2016

    BETM first battery energy storage customer in CAISO

  • 2018

    BETM becomes a proud subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Corporation
