About Us

History can reveal a lot about any organization. Ours is unique, starting all the way back with the issuance of the first FERC market-based rate license, and evolving along with the US ISO and power markets. Today we are focused growing our third-party customer energy management and proprietary trading platforms to be consistently high-quality and top-performing.

Mindset of a start-up. Resources of a corporation.

Boston Energy Trading and Marketing (BETM) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, a global integrated business enterprise that develops and operates businesses across virtually every industry, including industrial finance, energy, metals, machinery, chemicals, and daily living essentials. Mitsubishi’s current activities have expanded far beyond its traditional trading operations to include investments and business management in diverse fields including natural resources development, manufacturing of industrial goods, retail, new energy, infrastructure, finance and new technology-related businesses.

BETM has been optimizing our customers’ generation assets for over 15 years. Our current organization has its roots in Citizens Power, dating back to 1989 when Citizens obtained the first FERC power marketing license and market-based-rate authorization.

Citizens Lehman Power was acquired by Edison Mission Energy in 2000 and became Edison Mission Marketing & Trading (EMMT). As the power marketing arm of Edison Mission Energy, EMMT optimized Edison Mission’s 10,000 MW fleet of gas, coal, wind and transmission assets by employing strategies to capitalize on market opportunities and manage commodity and basis risk. In 2014, NRG Energy acquired EMMT and subsequently set up BETM to stand distinctly as a customer-focused services business.

A HOME BASE FOR EXPERTISE

In August 2018, Mitsubishi Corporation’s Diamond Generating subsidiary acquired Boston Energy from NRG. By adding BETM, Mitsubishi expands its North American platform to include energy management services and congestion trading, supplementing their growing portfolio of renewables, gas and distributed generation.

Currently, we are contracted to manage approximately 7,000 MW of gas, renewables, energy storage, and coal generation, including some of the newest renewables and gas-fired plants in the country. We supply wholesale power and gas services to retail suppliers and also manage customer transmission.

We look forward to serving your needs in the immediate future.
